Alencia Johnson News

Alencia Johnson stands at the intersection of activism, progressive politics, and cultural transformation, working to fight for justice and liberty by rooting herself in love for everyone. As director of public engagement for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Action Fund, Johnson collaborates with influential figures in politics, the media, the arts, and business to alter public perceptions of reproductive rights, particularly as they relate to people of color and the LGBTQ community.

Johnson founded the constituency communications division, which is in charge of leading and executing national communication campaigns aimed at involving the LGBTQ, Latino, young, and faith communities as well as the African-American and Latino communities. Johnson also holds the position of director of public engagement for Planned Parenthood.

Johnson, a native of Virginia, began her communications career at GEICO’s corporate headquarters after earning her B.A. in communications and leadership studies from Christopher Newport University. Before joining the organization, she worked at Planned Parenthood’s Chicago headquarters during President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.

Since the 2016 election, Planned Parenthood has successfully thwarted three attempts to repeal the Affordable Services Act (including one that featured a proposal to prevent Medicaid recipients from visiting the organization for services). During our conversation, we touched on a number of issues, including the development of Planned Parenthood’s Stand With Black Women project, Johnson’s remarks regarding Judge Kavanaugh, Planned Parenthood’s plans to continue operating during the current administration, and how millennials might become more involved with the nonprofit organization.
