Alex Smalley News

The victor of the 2023 John Deere Classic will go into the final round alone after a week in which it seemed likely that a rookie would be declared the champion. In his third round, Brendon Todd used a couple of late birdies to pull away from a crowded bunch that was full of rising stars. Todd shot a 5-under 66 to finish with a one-stroke advantage over Alex Smalley, Denny McCarthy, and Adam Schenk.

The three players who are closest to Todd will all be vying for their maiden PGA Tour triumphs, while Todd aims for his fourth. The former Georgia Bulldog is in the lead after 54 holes for the sixth time in his career, and he has won twice before. This change could end up being the most challenging because a total of 15 players are within four strokes of the lead.

Cameron Young, who is now leading after 36 holes, is still within earshot despite a disappointing third round that saw him sign for an even-par 71. Young will have very little room for mistake in Sunday’s decisive round at TPC Deere Run because he was the only player inside the top 15 on the leaderboard to finish Saturday without breaking par. On Sunday, there will be an opportunity for Peter Kuest, previous John Deere Classic champions J.T. Poston and Lucas Glover, and Honda Classic victor Chris Kirk.

2023 John Deere Classic updated odds and picks

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Brendon Todd: 33/10
  • Denny McCarthy: 18/5
  • Adam Schenk: 9/2
  • Alex Smalley: 5-1
  • Cameron Young: 14-1
  • Peter Kuest: 14-1
  • Chris Kirk: 22-1
  • Mark Hubbard: 25-1
  • J.T. Poston: 30-1
  • Lucas Glover: 30-1

With the exception of the blip on the par-3 16th, McCarthy played superbly. He dropped four different birdie tries from inside 12 feet, missing his fair share of scoring opportunities. He made up for it with long-distance connections, with an eagle on the par-4 14th serving as the most remarkable. McCarthy’s tee-to-green game has seemed solid over the past month, and if he can consistently sink putts, he will be able to win for the first time in his PGA Tour career.
