He was dubbed the “Missile Man of India” and is regarded as one of history’s greatest teachers. He was essential to India’s advancement in both space and defence research. Who was APJ Abdul Kalam?
With the backing of both the governing Bharatiya Janata Party and the then-opposition Indian National Congress, Kalam was chosen as India’s 11th president in 2002. He served one term as “People’s President” and then went back to his civilian life of teaching, writing, and public service. He had received a number of honours, including the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India.
On July 27, 2015, while giving a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, Kalam collapsed and passed away at the age of 83 after what appeared to be a heart arrest. In his hometown of Rameswaram, thousands of people, including national leaders, attended the funeral service. He was buried there with full state honours.
Kalam joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (by Press Information Bureau, Government of India) as a scientist after earning his degree from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1960 and joining the Defence Research & Development Service (DRDS). He began his career by creating a small hovercraft, but he wasn’t persuaded to accept a position at DRDO. Working for the renowned space scientist Vikram Sarabhai, Kalam joined the INCOSPAR.
