Bonnie Garmus, 65, was born and raised in California and had lived in Seattle and Geneva before migrating to London in 2017. Brie Larson will portray Elizabeth Zott, an American scientist who was dismissed in 1955 for being pregnant, in the upcoming television version of her worldwide bestselling debut book Lessons in Chemistry. Elizabeth Zott seeks payback by accepting a job as the host of a teatime cooking program.
As Stephen King put it, the book is “the Catch-22 of early feminism: witty, occasionally hilarious, angry, and frequently surreal.” Garmus, who also works as a copywriter and creative director, discusses the book after attending a literary event in Dubai.
I think humor is a fantastic weapon for writers who want to address a difficult issue without seeming sanctimonious. In other words, sexism is not amusing because it is utterly unscientific, demeaning, unhappy, tedious, uninteresting, ineffective, dumb, and ugly.
