Three days after Biden pled guilty to two misdemeanor tax counts to conclude a federal investigation into his finances, the House Ways and Means Committee made public the testimony of an Internal Revenue Service whistleblower revealing new allegations of questionable business practices. Gary Shapley, an IRS agent, testified before the Republican-led committee in May and offered two allegations that might be considered detrimental regarding the president’s suspected participation in a questionable business transaction and political interference in the Biden probe.
Shapley, a 14-year IRS veteran, was in charge of the investigation into Biden’s tax returns. He is joined in the accusation by another agent, who has not been named publicly but has identified himself to the committee as a Democrat.
The two claim that a Justice Department prosecutor obstructed their investigation and gave Biden’s legal team too much information. Shapley asserted that his team had sufficient evidence to charge Biden with felonies in addition to the two misdemeanors for willfully failing to pay nearly $1 million in taxes.
The Justice Department, in Shapley’s words, “provided preferential treatment, slow-walked the investigation, and did nothing to avoid obvious conflicts of interest in this investigation.” Before the House Ways and Means Committee, Shapley gave a testimony. According to the Justice Department, the U.S. Attorney assigned to investigate the president’s son had complete independence from the attorney general and other parties.
Shapley also discussed a WhatsApp conversation he had overheard between Biden and Chinese asset manager Henry Zhao. According to Shapley’s account of the message, Biden reportedly reminded Zhao that he was seated next to his father while they were negotiating an energy deal in July 2017 and said, “We would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled.”
If the sale wasn’t completed that evening, he continued, “I will make sure that between the man sitting next to me and everyone he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction.” Shapley added that Zhao subsequently paid Biden $100,000.
The descriptions in the texts don’t seem good for either Biden. The president claimed he never took part in his son’s transnational business dealings. The claim that Joe Biden was actually present when Hunter sent that text, however, remains untested because Shapley provided no evidence to support it.
(The younger Biden at the time did just about anything to support his sex and crack cocaine addictions.) Rob Walker, Hunter’s former business partner, was the focus of a different interview, according to Shapley. Hunter created the “projection” that his father would ever be engaged in one of their deals, Walker acknowledged to the IRS.
