John, a resident of Cairns, is Wuthathi from the Cape York Peninsula and Meriam from Murray (Mer) Island in the Torres Strait. He spent nearly three decades working for National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organizations in the public sector in media positions, devising and implementing a wide range of communication and media strategies as well as planning and managing significant national Indigenous events.
He also held the position of director of communications and marketing for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council. John holds the positions of Co-Chair of the National NAIDOC Committee and Deputy Chair of the Indigenous Reference Group at the National Museum of Australia. At the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre, he had previously held the positions of Deputy Chair and Member of the ACT Indigenous Elected Body.
