Julie Herrod News

It is highly recommended that viewers of ‘Wait Until Dark’, the suspenseful thriller starring Audrey Hepburn and which made its debut yesterday at the Music Hall, practice patience throughout the film’s unclear details as well as the slow and agonizing buildup to the chilling dénouement.

It takes a while for this fable of three smart and terrible gangsters breaking into the flat of a young blind woman in St Luke’s Place in search of a priceless doll to get to the point where it hooks you. For approximately an hour and a half, the young woman responds to the dramatic bullies’ elaborate lies with submissive belief.

In this portrayal, there are also many instances of dark and evil tricks being played on the brave and gentle woman, who at first has no idea where the doll is (it has been given to her unaware husband, who has neglected to tell her about it and is not at home), as well as protracted intervals of boring chatter that may annoy a viewer.

Only after this build-up is complete—once the diabolical plot is launched and the young woman suddenly knows she has been duped and is in grave danger—does the shock and suspense of the scenario hit the audience with almost the same force as they visibly hit the young woman.

As the blind woman uses all of her strength and cunning to thwart her attackers and save her life, the drama intensifies from this point on. It is, to put it bluntly, a bare-faced melodrama with no character development of any type, with the exception of the example of a person finding the strength to overcome a disability.

However, the skill with which Miss Hepburn portrays the sad role, the quickness with which she adapts, and the deftness with which she conveys terror bring sympathy and worry to her and give her real substance in the concluding scenes.

In Terence Young’s workmanlike directing of an inescapably verbose script that Robert and Jane-Howard Carrington adapted from Frederick Knott’s successful stage play, the entire cast turns into superb performances. Julie Herrod plays a 14-year-old neighbor and occasionally the blind woman’s companion and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. makes a brief appearance as her husband. Alan Arkin, Richard Crenna, and Jack Weston play the thugs.
