Katie Zelem News
When Katie Zelem, the captain of Manchester United, was not selected for England’s final pre-tournament camp in April, she believed her World Cup dreams were dead.
Zelem, 27, started for England for the first time in her ninth appearance when they defeated China 6-1 on Tuesday in Adelaide in their last group match.
On May 31, she was one of the six midfielders selected for the 23-person team.
When I wasn’t chosen after the Euros, Zelem commented, “That was one of the hardest moments to take.”
“When I received the news that I had not been selected for the April camp, I truly believed that my World Cup dream was over. Before the selection, there was no other camp.
“For a few days, I truly believed that despite my best efforts throughout the season, it was simply not meant to be.
“At Manchester United, we played in some crucial contests for the league championship and the FA Cup final, and I think that really helped shift my focus to just being the best I could for my club,” the player said.
Zelem, who was named in the preliminary team but was not selected for Euro 2022, said, “It just feels worlds apart” in Australia.
“The girls were talking about it a few days ago how it was a year to the day since winning the Euros,” continued Zelem.
“I sat there and watched them win the Euros a year ago today. Football can change quite quickly, and it has in my situation.
After defeating Haiti, Denmark, and China three times in the group stages, England will play Nigeria in the round of sixteen on Monday.
Germany, a two-time champion, Canada, an Olympic champion, and Brazil, a South American champion, were all eliminated during the group round.
“There’s no way we want to return home the next week. We all seem to be aware of our ultimate objective, which is to remain in place for three more weeks, said Zelem.
‘Meringue-tangs’ band formation
The Lionesses have been amusing themselves off the pitch while Zelem continues to concentrate on issues on it.
Zelem, who is now in charge of the DJing, stated on Saturday that a handful of the squad’s members have created a girl band named the “Meringue-tangs.”
“It’s harder choosing the songs while on the bus, which explains why I wasn’t that nervous [on Tuesday]!” Zelem joked.
There are many individuals to please. Everyone is making noise. Nevertheless, I tell the females, “You know what, I’m the DJ, don’t tell the DJ what to do.”
“Rachel Daly and Millie Bright, two singers, tell us we’ve started a lady band. The ‘Meringue-tangs’ are Daly, Bright, Keira [Walsh], and I.
We may have recently had meringues for dessert, though I’m not sure why. Due to our mild tone deafness, you shouldn’t listen to us.
The Meringue-tangs’ playlist includes Whitney Houston’s best hits, “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge, and “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.
The rest of the bus has been invited to the auditions, but captain Bright reported that no applications have yet been received.
“You know, we’re not Beyonce, but we’re trying to get Georgia [Stanway] in. Really, we can’t sing! However, we laugh. To be fair, we always play a sing-song on the way to training.
“We like to think that we struck a few good notes. It’s nice since we all bring a different flavor.
“Meringue-tangs” merely came up during one of the dinners; there isn’t really a rationale for it. Since it stayed ever since, you might or might not see us on Britain’s Got Talent in the future.
