Khalid Kamau News

A Georgia mayor was arrested and charged with burglary and criminal trespassing on Saturday, which made it possible for one of the five members of the city council who had sued the mayor this year to temporarily take his place.

The mayor of South Fulton in metro Atlanta, Khalid Kamau, was accused of first-degree burglary and criminal trespassing. On the same day, he was freed after posting bail bonds for $11,000.

Additionally, a mental health evaluation was mandated for him, according to Atlanta’s NBC affiliate WXIA.

The city’s public affairs director turned down the police department’s request for more information on Sunday, citing an “ongoing investigation.”

Jacqueline Howell, the interim director of public affairs, declared that “the City of South Fulton is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their position, are subject to the same fair and just treatment.”

On Sunday, the incident report was requested from the city’s public records office.

On Sunday, a message was sent to Kamau’s chief of staff, and the official city email address did not immediately receive a response. Kamau posted on Facebook on Saturday saying he felt “good” and “free.”

“God continues to use me. Keep an eye out,” he wrote.

In addition, Kamau quoted a chapter from the Bible that talked about “those who are persecuted because of righteousness.”

Kamau will be replaced as acting mayor by Natasha Williams-Brown, a member of the city council and the mayor pro tem, according to WXIA. She assured the station that even after she assumes the position of mayor, the business will carry on as usual in the city.

She stated, “If I am required to do any formal duties as the acting mayor, I will do so until Mayor Khalid resumes his duties.

In March, Williams-Brown and four other council members filed a lawsuit to have Kamau removed from his position. According to court records, only two of the council members were not parties to the lawsuit.

According to a report at the time by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Kamau is accused of recording private executive sessions and intentionally disclosing sensitive information for his own gain.

Kamau and the council have had a tense relationship for more than a year. In June 2022, the council requested an inquiry by the district attorney’s office over charges Kamau made on a credit card issued by the city that were uncovered during an audit.

The following month, he requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation look into the City Council for potential wrongdoing, according to WXIA.
