When their father, Manuel Gehring, was located a week later in California, he admitted to killing Sarah, 14, and Philip, 11, before leaving with their bodies strapped to the seats of his van.

A mother is in mourning after her ex abducted her children on July 4.

While he was awaiting trial in February 2004, Gehring killed himself in custody. In December 2005, the bodies of the children were discovered off I-80 in northwest Ohio.

At the time that her children disappeared, Gehring and his ex-wife, who had remarried and was expecting twins, were fighting for custody. Teresa “Teri” Knight described the time between their kidnapping and the discovery of their bodies as “unbelievably surreal.”

She remembered a number of tough times when the media interest would diminish and she would assume that no one was still looking for them.

She finds it easier to forget about Sarah and Philip’s passing because of her twin kids, who are now 9 and a half years old. She asserted that she is unable to go back to “that world,” where there is no normalcy and only strong emotion, because of her own stubbornness.

She had Molly and Mallory three weeks before Sarah and Philip vanished, less than five months after her second marriage.

The twins refer to Sarah and Philip as their “guardian angels” and release balloons into the sky on their birthdays. When Sarah cheers, both of Knight’s girls “wonder and wish what might have been,” she says.

She’s still upset over how Gehring “got out of it easy” by killing himself. She did, however, express her relief at the fact that there was no chance the trial would go wrong and let him get away with it.

“That would have been worse,” she said. While instructing nursing at Concord Community College, she is working towards her second master’s degree.

With her husband Jim and the daughters, she always departs town around this time of year, and this year is no different. On a beach in Maine, they are pitching their tent. As Mary and Jim were traveling back from Maine on that Fourth of July ten years ago, she alleges they were struck by the stunning reality of missing children and a sense of dread at the prospect of never seeing them again.
