Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello’s murders are allegedly the cause of Rex Heuermann’s arrest on Thursday in Massapequa. He wasn’t charged with the death of Norwich resident Maureen Brainard-Barnes on Friday, but police said he is a key suspect in the case, and they anticipate wrapping up their investigation shortly.

On July 14, 2007, exactly 16 years ago, Brainard-Barnes was reported missing to the Norwich Police Department by a friend.

How did Maureen Brainard-Barnes fare?

When she vanished in 2007, 25-year-old Brainard-Barnes was living on Prospect Street in Norwich, Connecticut, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

She was working out of Manhattan hotels and motels, according to the police, and was a sex worker who advertised on Craigslist, Backpage, and other websites. Authorities think Brainard-Barnes traveled from New London to Grand Central Terminal on an Amtrak train on July 6, 2007.

She was last seen with a female companion who went home early, according to the police, and she called a friend in Connecticut at 11:43 p.m. on July 9, 2007, the last time she was heard from.

The night of July 9, 2007, she informed her companion that she would be leaving the motel to meet someone on an “out-call,” even though she was well-known for working out of hotel rooms, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

According to officials, the New York Officials Department took over the investigation when a friend reported her missing to the Norwich Police Department.

On December 13, 2010, while searching for Shannan Gilbert, who was also missing, the remains of Brainard-Barnes were discovered off Ocean Parkway close to Gilgo Beach.

She was who?

According to her obituary, Brainard-Barnes was born on July 14, 1982, in New London parents Marie Ducharme of Groton and the late Robert Senecal.

According to her sister Melissa Cann, Brainard-Barnes was raised in Groton and went to Fitch High School in 2012. Before going missing, Brainard-Barnes had two children at the age of 17 and became a mother, according to her sister.

Cann claimed that her sister had worked as a telemarketer and cashier after initially working as a card dealer at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Sarah Marquis, a friend of Brainard-Barnes, revealed to The Bulletin in Norwich in January 2011 that she “had a lot of energy” and “thought everyone was her friend.”

Because Brainard-Barnes was frequently on the phone, according to Marquis, friends realized something was off when she stopped calling.

Cann stated to the Courant, “I just want to know,” adding, “I don’t want to die not knowing who took my sister’s life, you know.”

The ‘Gilgo Four’: who were they?

Other human remains were discovered in December 2010 as a result of the hunt for Gilbert, a 23-year-old woman who went missing in May 2010, according to the Suffolk County Police Department. Barthelemy, 24, Brainard-Barnes, Costello, 27, and Waterman, 22, were the first four sets of remains to be identified.

All four, according to the police, “worked as Craigslist escorts and were last seen between July 2007 and September 2010.”

Police reported that 10 people’s remains, including several female victims, a male victim, and a toddler, were discovered along the Ocean Beach Parkway.
