Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, who has been in office for six months and is up for recall, sat down with KPIX for a televised interview that didn’t quite go as planned.
In his campaign, Price advocated for progressive changes to the criminal justice system, such as lessening the use of jail, not charging minors as adults, and holding police officers responsible. In high-profile instances, such as the slayings of Home Depot employee Blake Mohs and child Jasper Wu, she has drawn criticism for her decisions regarding charging.
Residents of the East Bay, public safety advocates, and victims’ families who disagree with her agenda have claimed that she pushes for penalties that are overly mild and favor offenders above victims.
Price stated, “I feel, without a doubt, that my heart goes out to folks who have lost loved ones in this town. “Some people are unable to actually appreciate the work that we do,” said the district attorney’s office, “because we are very, very committed to ensuring that we are providing the best services for victims.”
“Save Alameda for Everyone” or S.A.F.E., a nonprofit, has filed official paperwork to begin a recall. The action announces the committee’s intention to formally start collecting money and signatures.
Price said that outside special interest groups backed by the Republican Party were behind the recall movement.
“I live in East Oakland even and I know a lot of people say, ‘Oh that’s terrible!’ I feel safe,” Price said.

“Any time we can divert someone from the criminal justice system, that is a goal because the criminal justice system has shown to be racially biased,” said Price. Since Price entered office, a number of seasoned prosecutors have resigned, citing their inability to ethically and lawfully carry out their responsibilities to protect victims’ rights.
“To me, a prosecutor with seven or ten years’ experience is not seasoned. I’ve been a lawyer for 40 years, so if someone claims to be experienced in their field, they must demonstrate to me where they have been practicing law at the highest caliber for the past 40 years, Price said.
