Bio
Marathe remains in his well-respected position as the team’s principal contract negotiator and salary cap architect, in addition to managing the football analytics division and other football-related responsibilities. Alongside General Manager John Lynch and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan, he oversees the 49ers’ adherence to the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement and collaborates on all facets of the team’s football operations.
Marathe has been instrumental in constructing the 49ers’ current squad, securing contract extensions for several important players in recent years, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, and cornerback Jimmie Ward.
Additionally, Marathe’s efforts in free agency have assisted in the acquisition of successful senior players, including Pro Bowlers DL Dee Ford (trade/extension), FB Kyle Juszczyk, LB Kwon Alexander, All-Pro CB Richard Sherman, and T Trent Williams. Marathe has regularly kept the club in a favorable salary cap position over the years.
Marathe oversaw the construction of Levi’s Stadium and contributed to the realization of the idea of an unrivaled fan experience at the venue while serving as 49ers club president from 2014 to 2016 and COO from 2010 to 2013. The club concentrated on adding technology, sustainability, and culture to the stadium experience using the Bay Area as inspiration. His leadership was essential as he established the concept and hired many of the current management team members throughout the club’s move from Candlestick Park to Levi’s Stadium. Additionally, he was an essential member of the tiny group that established and nurtured VenueNext, a technology business that is redefining what it means to attend a live event.
Along with 49ers games, the location has played host to a wide range of non-NFL events, including the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship, Super Bowl 50, WrestleMania 31, the 2015 NHL Stadium Series, many PAC 12 Championship Games, the RedBox Bowl, concerts, and international soccer. The stadium received praise from the business community while Marathe was in charge, most notably winning the coveted Sports Business Journal Sports Facility of the Year and Venue of the Year awards at the 2015 Stadium Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain.
Marathe is in charge of overseeing large investment prospects for 49ers Enterprises as well as outside commercial endeavors. Marathe serves as the vice chairman and a member of the board for Leeds United, an English Premier League team that is owned in part by 49ers Enterprises. The 49ers made their initial investment in Leeds United in 2018, when the storied football team was in the Championship League, and raised their ownership to 37% in January 2021. In 2020, Leeds United made the 16-year journey back to the top division of English football, returning automatically after winning the Championship. In 2019, the first year of 49ers Enterprises’ partnership with Leeds United, the team advanced to the Championship playoff semifinal game but fell just short of promotion.
Marathe took over as USA Cricket’s chairman in October 2018, and since then, he has worked hard to establish a top-tier T20 professional cricket league in the United States and achieve USA Cricket’s acceptance as the 105th member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Marathe is highly involved in the Bay Area community outside of the 49ers, supporting groups and issues close to his heart. He presently serves on the boards of Project HEAL and Andrea’s Voice, two charity organizations dedicated to raising money and awareness for the fight against eating disorders. Both of his children were born at Sequoia Hospital, where he sits on the board of directors. Marathe teaches MBA courses on Negotiation Dynamics in Sports, Entertainment, and Media as a member of the faculty at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. He is a Lecturer in Management there. He was chosen to be a part of the Sports Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 class in 2015. Marathe has also won the Fritz Pollard Alliance’s Johnnie L. Cochran Salute to Excellence Award twice (in 2012 and 2019), which recognizes individuals and groups that exhibit exceptional performances on the field, in front offices, and throughout the United States by exemplifying diversity, bravery, and deserving performance.
Marathe, a native of Saratoga, California, was indoctrinated with a love for the 49ers at a very young age. Since he was six years old, he has hardly ever missed any 49ers games as a die-hard Bay Area sports fan. Marathe has strong ties to the Bay Area; he graduated with distinction from the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley for his undergraduate degree and from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business for his MBA.
Living in Los Altos, California, are Marathe, his wife Jennifer, and their two kids, Juniper and Maren.
