Sam Haskell News

This year, a number of incidents surrounding Miss USA made headlines, but it wasn’t the first time trouble dogged one of the nation’s biggest pageants.

The Miss America Organization’s demise under Sam Haskell, who served as CEO for more than a decade, is examined in “Secrets of Miss America,” a new A&E series that premieres on Monday. Haskell resigned in December 2017 following the release of press copies of crude and offensive internal emails in which he mocked several prior Miss America winners.

Mallory Hagan, a former Miss America winner, discussed her relationship with Haskell in the new docu-series. Hagan said that Haskell had regularly propagated untrue rumors about her sexual life, even alleging that she had attempted a hookup with Chris Harrison, the previous host of “The Bachelor,” who presided over the competition from 2011 to 2017.

After winning in 2013, Hagan joined the Miss America family, and she said in the documentary that Haskell had referred to her as “another daughter” to him. But she claimed that things changed once she started dating Brent Adams, who was Haskell’s vice president of marketing for Miss America.

In the documentary, Adams said that Haskell wanted him to date Mary Lane rather than Hagan and repeatedly threatened to fire him if the two didn’t break up. Previously, he told The Huffington Post that Haskell had said to him, “You don’t need a piece of trash like Mallory, you need someone with class and money like my daughter,” and had unintentionally texted a group conversation suggesting his daughter try to grab Adams’ hand.

Adams reportedly declined to fire Hagan, and Haskell allegedly started pursuing her reputation and professional goals as a result.

Hagan stated in the docuseries that Haskell promised to assist her in achieving her goal of becoming a TV personality when her tenure as Miss America ended.

She relocated to Los Angeles and started scheduling meetings with ABC executives and “Dancing With the Stars” producers.

She remarked, “It seemed to be a really great fit for me.” And all of a sudden, that was simply off the table. It doesn’t make sense why these things keep coming in my direction and then mysteriously disappearing.

Adams claimed in the documentary that he told Hagan what Haskell had been saying about her behind closed doors when she voiced her disappointment to him.

Adams added, “I observed Sam started talking really poorly about her in certain meetings. Sam was talking about trying to hook up with Chris Harrison when I was seated with high-level network officials in the ABC office in Los Angeles.

These rumors started to get among the close-knit pageant world including past Miss Americas.

“We started to hear allegations that Mallory had slept with someone in every state she was visiting as Miss America, which is categorically untrue,” Claire Adkisson, Miss New York 2010, stated in the docuseries.

“I did hear negative talk about Mallory, about her sexual life, that she was crazy, that she was wild,” admitted Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008. It didn’t make sense to me, she said.

Hagan claims that when she confided in a former Miss America who shall remain nameless about the rumors Haskell was circulating, they advised her that the legacy of the pageant was more significant than her feelings.

It gave Hagan the impression that either no one would be interested or, if they were, they wouldn’t be prepared to speak up.

Adams continued to work for Haskell after Hagan ended their relationship, but she said that Haskell continued to pursue her.

Adams later disclosed Haskell’s emails to the media in December 2017.

Haskell alleged that Hagan had slept with more than 25 men in one email, which was initially made public by The Huffington Post. He frequently made fun of her size in others.

Emails also seemed to indicate that Haskell and other Miss America administrators targeted Hagan’s lucrative pageant coaching business, which she started after her TV career failed to take off, and assisted in its closure.

Haskell, Miss America Organisation president Josh Randle, and Miss America Organisation chairperson Lynn Weidner all left the group a few days after the emails were made public.

Haskell claimed in a statement that much of the information was “dishonest, deceptive, and despicable” and “based on private emails that were stolen by ex-employees”

“Those who know my heart know that this is not indicative of my character, nor is it indicative of my business acumen,” he continued. I have the utmost respect for the female participants and hosts of this program.

When Insider contacted Haskell, Harrison, and the Miss America Organisation for comment, no one responded right away.

A&E will debut “Secrets of Miss America” on July 10 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, new episodes are broadcast.
