Sarah Langs News

Baseball is and has always been the best sport. No one understands or communicates that better than Sarah Langs.

Langs, a classic of television and the intrepid baseball statistician said last fall that she has ALS and will probably pass away in 2021. In the wake of the announcement, the MLB community has made every effort to let Langs know how much her commitment and precise, wonderful efforts are treasured.

This weekend’s Lou Gehrig Day ushers in MLB’s dedication to the cause as ALS Awareness Month draws to a close. For the duration of the game (as well as the larger sporting world and fandom community), Langs has taken the initiative to lead the battle by bopping her fist in support of the cause.

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for this degenerative illness. It hasn’t diminished Langs’ excitement, though, and the baseball community continues to fight for her and numerous others.

Despite being a lifelong Mets fan, Langs was overcome this week by Yankees-related emotion when a group of powerful individuals — Gerrit Cole, Aaron Boone, Brian Cashman, Julia Steinbrenner, Omar Minaya, Buster Olney, and PR whiz Jason Zillo — welcomed her on a Zoom call and informed her that she would be their Hope Week honoree on July 4, the anniversary of Gehrig’s well-known speech.

Langs undoubtedly soaked up the love and gratitude, but she still took the time to tell Gerrit Cole that she stood up for him this summer. When the other MLB Network employees objected to listing Cole as one of their Top 10 pitchers, she pushed Cole’s name back into the argument. We adore Sarah because of this. There is always baseball to talk about, regardless of the emotions that are present at the time.

Long before her diagnosis, Langs and Gehrig continued to share an unusual affinity, as Mandy Bell, Langs’ employee, and best friend, observed in her heartfelt obituary for MLB.com. On May 2, which is also Langs’ birthday, Gehrig decided not to join the roster for the first time, breaking his Iron Man streak. When Langs initially started working at ESPN, a piece of Gehrig’s speech was placed next to her desk; out of pure curiosity, she once took a picture of it.
