Sean Kaufman News

It’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty” The actors found it difficult to maintain the season’s dramatic mindset for too long because Season 2 goes into some summertime grief.

Sean Kaufman, who plays Steven on the show, said in an interview with TheWrap conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike: “Whatever acting method people choose to use — replacement or method — it’s tough because it’s like I’m surrounded by funny people in a loving environment, and all I want to do — especially in moments of like extreme vulnerability like that — is to crack a joke to ease the tension or not let myself go there because it’s too painful.” It’s difficult to truly permit yourself to go there, especially day after day after day, as was the case for much of Season 2.

Belly (Lola Tung) is in a very different place in the second season of the Prime Video series based on Jenny Han’s books as she mourns the passing of Susannah Fisher (Rachel Blanchard) and analyses what went wrong in the early stages of a relationship with her longtime crush Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney). Belly and her brother Steven (Sean Kaufman), who are now isolated as a result of both of these incidents, don’t have any plans to visit Cousins Beach this summer.

Season 1 came to an optimistic conclusion when Susannah revealed to her sons that she will begin an experimental treatment for her cancer. A gift she sends to Steven for his high school graduation is among the first indications that she has passed away.

“The tone of Season 2 felt completely different. Naturally, there was a significant change while we were still filming the same program, but tonally I recall how little prep I would have needed for Season 1,” remarked Kaufman. “I would just be chatting backstage and laughing and chilling, and then suddenly they would call action, and we would be in it. Season 2 required a lot of pausing to consider what was happening and how best to address the topic at hand.

Susannah’s passing was first mentioned in the second book of Jenny Han’s trilogy, “It’s Not Summer Without You.”

Blanchard told TheWrap, “As far as I knew, they were always going to stick to the books.”

Despite the somber tone of the first three episodes of the second season, Blanchard, Jackie Chung, and Kyra Sedgwick still find humor and joy in the program.

I believe there are many happy occasions, Chung stated. Children are always.

Blanchard concluded, “still finding a way to have a good time.” and it is life.

On Prime Video, “The Summer I Turned Pretty”‘s first three episodes air on July 14. The remaining episodes will air every Friday.
