Trevor Reed Wiki, Wikipedia, Released, Age, Swap -: Trevor Reed is a former United States Marine Corps veteran who was arrested in Russia in 2019 and sentenced to nine years in prison for violence against a Russian police officer. He was released in April 2022 as part of a prisoner exchange with the United States.
Reed was born in 1991 or 1992 in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from high school in 2010 and then joined the Marine Corps. He served in the Marine Corps for four years, including a deployment to Afghanistan.
In 2019, Reed was traveling through Russia when he was arrested and accused of assaulting a Russian police officer. He was denied bail and sentenced to nine years in prison. The State Department announced on Tuesday that Marine veteran Trevor Reed, who was unfairly imprisoned in Russia for three years before being freed as part of a prisoner swap last year, was hurt while fighting in Ukraine.
At a news conference, deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel stated, “We are aware that Trevor Reed was injured while taking part in battle in Ukraine. Mr. Reed is receiving medical attention in Germany after being airlifted there.
Reed’s status was not disclosed, nor did Patel specify how he was hurt. Unnamed by Patel, the voluntary organisation that Reed was sent to Germany by.
According to a defence official, Reed is receiving medical care at a US military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.
Reed “was not engaged in any activities on behalf of the U.S. government” when he was in Ukraine, Patel emphasised.
Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary for the White House, avoided questions about the potential impact on the ability of the American government to extradite businessman Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich who are detained in Russia of the revelation that Reed had been fighting in Ukraine.
What I will grant is that the teams are exerting every effort and exploring every option to return Paul and Evan to their homes, said Jean-Pierre.
A U.S. official revealed in confidence that the administration is “extremely concerned” about how the Reed situation will be perceived in Moscow.
A representative for the Reed family declined to respond to the rumours.
Russian authorities claim Reed assaulted an officer while being brought to a police station after a night of heavy drinking, leading to his detention in Moscow in the summer of 2019.
The allegations were refuted by Reed, his Russian partner, and his family. The American ambassador to Russia referred to the evidence as tenuous.
Despite the protests, Reed received a nine-year prison term.
In April 2022, Reed was freed in exchange for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian drug dealer who had been serving a 20-year federal sentence for arranging to bring cocaine into the United States.
When Reed went to Ukraine and how he ended up fighting there were not immediately apparent.
According to Patel, “Since the start of this war, we have warned that American citizens who travel to Ukraine, particularly for the purpose of taking part in fighting there, that they face significant risks, including the risk of capture or death or physical harm, as well.”
In a statement released on Tuesday, Whelan, an American businessman who is detained in Russia, expressed his regret over Reed’s injuries.
However, the liberation of a hostage is not the conclusion. After the hostage takers and others leave, they must deal with the fallout. The rage, retaliation, and anguish they must be feeling are beyond my comprehension,” Whelan added. “I sincerely hope he finds some peace now.”
Since December 2018, Whelan has been detained in a Russian prison. His accusation of spying by Russia is rejected by both him and the American administration. In 2020, Russia gave him a 16-year prison term. According to the State Department, he is unjustly being held.
Reed campaigned for the release of Whelan and basketball player Brittney Griner when he was freed from prison in Russia. In a December swap between the U.S. and Russia, Griner was set free.
In 2011, Reed joined the Marines as an infantryman. He served in a Marine unit that supports the president while Obama was in office.
According to his family, among other things, Reed guarded Joe Biden at Camp David in Maryland. In 2016, he was released from the Marines.
