Who is known as Black Diamond of Asia – The Enigma, the biggest cut diamond ever offered for auction, was put up for auction for £3.16 million on Wednesday in London after just being put on public display. The uncommon black diamond, also known as a carbonado diamond, is thought to have been produced more than 2.6 billion years ago when an asteroid or meteorite collided with Earth.

According to the auction house, “this particular type of black diamond is thought to have either come from meteoric impacts resulting in natural chemical vapour deposition or from an extraterrestrial origin — from supernovae explosions that formed diamond-bearing asteroids that ultimately collided with the Earth.”
The diamond, one of the hardest materials to cut, had never before been revealed by its anonymous 20-year owner. The rough diamond was transformed into a 55-face jewel over the course of three years by experts, and it was recently on display in Dubai, Los Angeles, and London.
Its design was influenced by the Hamsa, a palm-shaped Middle Eastern emblem of strength and protection that is also related to the number five. “The cost of the Enigma fell short of cosmic heights. The Enigma is a diamond with unmatched bragging rights, though, and that cannot be disputed, according to Tobias Kormind, general director of 77 Diamonds, the biggest online jeweller in Europe.
The Enigma diamond is “ground-breaking and amazing” due to its size, shape, and source, he continued. The majority of diamonds are cut into one of ten common shapes, however, the Enigma’s shape is shaped like a hand. The Enigma, which Guinness World Records recognised as the largest-known cut diamond in the world in 2006, is not a gem-quality diamond, and carbonados, which are not often used in jewellery or offered for auction, have recently gained popularity.
Since they are so extraordinarily hard, they are frequently utilised in industrial drilling. Prior to the auction, Sotheby’s referred to the diamond as a “cosmic wonder” and permitted bids in cryptocurrencies. The Key 10138 diamond sold for $12.3 million in Hong Kong last year and was paid for in cryptocurrencies.
