Rose Styron Career
Rose Styron is a poet, journalist, and human rights defender. She has published four poetry collections: From Summer to Summer (Viking Press, 1965), Thieves’ Afternoon (Viking Press, 1972), By Vineyard Light (Rizzoli, 1995), and Fierce Day (Friesen Press, 2015). Her own experiences, perceptions, and travels are reflected in her poems. She and other translators have contributed to two Viking Press publications: Modern Russian Poetry and Poets on Street Corners.
Rose Styron has written essays on international relations and human rights for a number of magazines, including The New York Review of Books, The Nation, The New Republic, The Paris Review, Ms. Magazine, Vogue, Holiday, Ramparts, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Chicago Sun-Times, etc.
Rose Styron has been actively involved in a number of human rights organizations ever since she joined the Amnesty International USA founding group in 1970. She has traveled widely for several organizations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, The Reebok Human Rights Foundation, The Lawyers Committee For Human Rights, Equality Now, and the Project on Justice.
She has also held leadership positions with the PEN Freedom-to-Write Committee, Amnesty International USA’s National Advisory Council, and the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Awards. She has traveled to places like Latin America, the USSR, Central Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia to advocate for human rights problems.
Rose Styron wrote the introductions to William Styron’s Letters to My Father (Louisiana State University Press, 2009) and The Selected Letters of William Styron (Random House, 2012), which she also edited. She also contributed a chapter to Unholy Ghost: Writers on Sickness (Harper Collins, 2002) in which she discussed William Styron’s sickness and its consequences on the family.
Rose Styron has received various honors and awards for her efforts as a poet and a human rights defender. She worked as a resident fellow at Harvard’s Carr Centre for Human Rights and Institute of Politics between 2009 and 2010. She also served as the co-chair of the Lincoln Centre stage production of Poetry & the Creative Mind, which the Academy of American Poets sponsored.
