Van Gisbergenr News
After passing Elliott, Van Gisbergen battled Haley in the last laps before the three-time Supercars champion seized the lead permanently. Elliott came in third, and Haley held on to take second.
As a part of Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 in Chicago, the 34-year-old New Zealander van Gisbergen had the chance to drive the Number 91 Chevrolet. The group’s goal is to have a bigger impact on the world.
Van Gisbergen won his first Supercars championship in 2016, and he has since added two more. He received assistance in his NASCAR debut from Darian Grubb, Tony Stewart’s crew chief when he won the Cup Series championship in 2011.
The race was planned to last 100 laps and 220 miles, but it was shortened because of the falling daylight after the start had to be delayed for an additional 90 minutes because of a historic downpour that inundated the track. The second half of the Xfinity Race, which was supposed to start after being delayed on Saturday due to lightning, has been scrapped.
Just before the race was scheduled to start, pole-sitter Denny Hamlin tweeted that there might need to be a delay due to the persistent rain. Noah Gragson also shared a video of one of his tires floating down the pit road. After that, NASCAR decided to allow the drivers to return to their trucks.
When the race began, there were puddles on the track, but eventually, the weather cleared. Even as it started to dry down and teams brought out their slick tires, water gushed all over the place as a driver slid into a tire barrier.
At the rows of tires in Turn 6, Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, and Gragson all came to a stop. Hamlin and Elliott entered the tired pack in Turn 2. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was struck by Bubba Wallace in the closing stages of the race and impaled in the tire barrier in Turn 1.
On the 50th lap, there was a significant 14-vehicle pileup on Michigan Avenue, which caused traffic to back up and probably made local Chicago drivers familiar with the area smile.
