The Summer I Turned Pretty is a coming-of-age romance drama television series based on Jenny Han’s book series of the same name. Han is also The Summer I Turned Pretty series’ creator and executive producer. Han also wrote the To All the Boys book series, which served as the inspiration for the corresponding Netflix original movie. The main focus of The Summer I Turned Pretty is Isabel “Belly” Conklin, the book’s protagonist and narrator, and her love triangle with Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher, the sons of Susannah Fisher, and the mother of Belly’s mother, Laurel Park. Susannah Fisher is Susannah Fisher’s best friend.

At the conclusion of The Summer, I Turned Pretty Season 1, Belly and Conrad eventually got together after years of flings. But when The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 started, Belly and Conrad were gone. After their romance ended in Season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, what happened to Belly and Conrad? The comparisons and differences between Belly and Conrad’s relationship in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 and the books are discussed further below.

Belly and Conrad split up for what reason?

Why do Belly and Conrad part ways in The Summer I Turned Pretty’s second season? In Season 2, Episode 1, “Love Lost,” viewers learn that Belly and Conrad broke up between the events of Seasons 1 and 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Belly counsels Conrad to put their relationship on hold in a flashback from Season 2, Episode 1, so that he and his brother Jeremiah may focus on Susannah’s cancer treatment. (Watchers learn Susannah died at the start of Season 2). Conrad agrees, but their break is short-lived because their first phone conversation following their break when Conrad is at Brown University, turns into a drawn-out conversation at two in the morning.

In a different flashback in Season 2, Episode 2, “Love Scene,” Belly and Conrad spend Christmas break together at the Fishers family house in Cousins. Despite pledging to stay friends for Jeremiah’s sake, Belly loses her virginity and they engage in their first-ever sexual encounter.

In a flashback to prom from Season 2, Episode 3, “Love Sick,” viewers observe Conrad growing distant from Belly as Susannah’s cancer condition deteriorates in the months preceding prom. At this point, Belly and Conrad formally part ways. Belly offers Conrad the chance to speak with her, but he declines.

Their friendship ends at prom when Conrad tries to leave early and keeps acting distant. Belly chases after him into the rain as Conrad breaks up with her, feeling as though he only makes things worse for her. Just as Conrad pulls away, Belly, whose prom dress is damaged by the rain, takes off the eternity necklace he gave her in Season 1. He then pushes it into his palm. She then collapses while being held by her brother Steven.

In It’s Not Summer Without You, the second book of The Summer I Turned Pretty, Belly and Conrad’s breakup is referenced, and this situation makes me think of that. Belly confronts Conrad at the prom in the book because he rarely dances with her, converses with her, or participates in any of the activities she had envisioned doing. When Belly discovers that Conrad only accompanied her to the dance at Susannah’s urging, they split up during the prom.
