The Summer I Turned Pretty is a coming-of-age romance drama television series based on Jenny Han’s book series of the same name. Han is also The Summer I Turned Pretty series’ creator and executive producer. Han also wrote the To All the Boys book series, which served as the inspiration for the corresponding Netflix original movie. The main focus of The Summer I Turned Pretty is Isabel “Belly” Conklin, the book’s protagonist and narrator, and her love triangle with Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher, the sons of Susannah Fisher, and the mother of Belly’s mother, Laurel Park. Why do Belly and Conrad part ways in The Summer I Turned Pretty’s second season? In Season 2, Episode 1, “Love Lost,” viewers learn that Belly and Conrad broke up between the events of Seasons 1 and 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Belly counsels Conrad to put their relationship on hold in a flashback from Season 2, Episode 1, so that he and his brother Jeremiah may focus on Susannah’s cancer treatment. (Watchers learn Susannah died at the start of Season 2). Conrad agrees, but their break is short-lived because their first phone conversation following their break when Conrad is at Brown University, turns into a drawn-out conversation at two in the morning.

Belly confronts Conrad at the prom in the book because he rarely dances with her, converses with her, or participates in any of the activities she had envisioned doing. When Belly discovers that Conrad only accompanied her to the dance at Susannah’s urging, they split up during the prom.
