Yusef Salaam News

The following evening, a 28-year-old lady was brutally raped in Central Park in New York City and left for dead. Salaam was one of five teenagers—four Black and one Latino—who were accused of committing a crime but were wrongfully convicted of it. After then, they became known as “The Central Park Five”.

Salaam shared his story of systemic failures, injustices, and personal triumphs in an hour-long keynote speech on January 20 at the Illinois State University Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Banquet in the Brown Ballroom of the Bone Student Centre, which was attended by a large crowd.

Salaam declared, “Nearly 34 years ago, I was run over by the spike wheels of justice. They assert that God won’t put you under more stress than you can handle. Although I may have wondered, “Why me?

Salaam and the other four members of the “Central Park Five” had their convictions overturned in 2002 after serving six years and eight months in prison when previously unidentified DNA evidence in the “Central Park Jogger Case” was matched to a convicted murderer and serial rapist who confessed to the crime. They gave rise to the “Exonerated Five”.

“I symbolize the microcosm of the macrocosm of cases like ours,” Salaam said. The Central Park Jogger’s situation is not rare. It is not until you enter what some have called the beast’s belly, or America’s womb. But I call it the womb because what matters most is what happens inside of you, not what happens to you. See, when I was 15 years old, people judged me more on the traits of my character than on the color of my skin.

Salaam said that while he was wrongfully detained, he had taken his mother’s advice. When the police started questioning him, she ordered him to stop talking to them. You have to participate in them. Salaam claimed that when he first heard such words while imprisoned, “I was prevented from letting time do me; rather, it helped me to do the time even though it was unfair time.” She added, “Because if I let time do me, I’d turn into the monster that would make them build new cages to house more monsters.”
